A view on the Swedish broadband market from the US
I apologize for writing on English but I do not have a Swedish keyboard. Feel free to reply to this thread in Swedish.
I write this for post for two reasons. The first reason is to thank the creator/creators of this site for their excellent work. It is hard to keep a good site going unless you get some response from your readers and this is the least I can do.
The second reason is to give my view on the Swedish broadband market since I have a different perspective from most posters.
I fond this site when I wanted to help my dad to find a broadband provider. I live in the US and he is in Sweden I can not tell him which one to choose only how to choose, luckily this site this all the explaining for me. Dad just singed up with UVTC we will se how it turns out.
Swedish DSL has impressive speeds, cable tend to dominate the US market for 3/MBits and up. US DSL speed has improved a little but the pone wiring is old. I am 5000 meters from the phone switch and I only sync at 768 KBits (service is 1.5/MBits).
Upload speed is poor in both markets. I do not believe that is a technical problem but the providers think people only read web pages. You can only get good upload speed if you have symmetrical DSL and then it tends to be a business account and you pay business prices. Few DSL users have more than 512/KBits upload speed. I am somewhat surprised that Sweden is not better in upload since download speed are so much higher.
The bundling of phone service (double or triple play) is growing fast in the US. The phone prices are much more transparent in the US for several reasons.
Local phone calls are a free part of the monthly price
You can get long distance for a fix price but that is less common (in State, US)
No extra charges to call cell phone (cell phone user pays for in-coming minutes)
The bundling prices are no that great yet but at lest they are easy to compare since monthly cost can be fix for broadband, TV and phone.
Keep up the good work and remember informed customer is our only way to get better service/products.
