Metro If you are looking for a more economical means of transportation and you're not carrying too much luggage, is to take the Metro. The Terminal Aerea station is next to the Domestic flights terminal, to the left when coming out from the international arrivals hall. Realize that the Metro has its own risks - pickpocketing is a moderate danger so be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings.

Utanför Mexikos fastland finns också underbara öar och halvöar.
Cozumel är den största av Mexikos karribiska öar, 47 kilometer lång och 15 km bred. Endast sju procent av öns yta är bebyggd och det finns stora möjligheter att hitta en egen strand. Längs ön sträcker sig världens näst längsta korallrev som bjuder på fantastiska naturscener. Cozumel är ett mecka för sportdykare, men passar lika bra för "amatörer" som nöjer sig med snorkel och cyklop.
Cancun är en av de mest kända och populäraste badorterna, det är en halvö som ligger på den östra sidan av Mexiko. Längs den långa härliga sandstranden ligger hotell, shoppingcenter och restauranger. De södra kustregionerna kan ha det extremt fuktigt mellan juli och september. December och februari är generellt sett de kallaste månaderna på året och ibland kan det t.o.m bli frysgrader. Lokalbefolkningens turist säsong är veckan före påsk och jul/nyår då det mesta är fullbokat. Juli och augusti är högsäsong för utlänska turister så då är det också väldigt mycket folk. Oktober till maj däremot är en idealisk tid att besöka Mexiko, då är det ganska torrt med behaglig värme.

Bra att veta: Varning! I Mexico City har man mycket hög kriminalitet och det är något som man ska vara medveten om så man inte utsätter sig för onödig fara i vissa situationer. Tillämpa sunt förnuft alltså! Personrån är mycket vanligt, så ta aldrig upp hela plånboken när du handlar, ha istället några mindre sedlar löst i olika fickor och förvara resten tex i strumpan, osynlig magväska eller safetybox. Bär inte heller dyrbara smycken i onödan. Tillskillnad från andra länder är ficktjuven ofta en skicklig proper äldre person som jobbar tillsammans med andra i ett team. Ett favorit tillhåll för dessa är tunnelbanan och speciellt under rusningstid när det är trångt.
Pengar och kostnad: Man kan klara sig på en ca US$20-30 om dagen om man har en lite lägre budget, medelkostnaden ligger annars runt US$60 om dagen. För det så får man då ett rum på medelklasshotell, reser med bra komfort och äter på en
medelklassrestaurang.

Introduction   

We did only a small part of Mexico at the end of our Ruta Maya trip. The sites in Mexico like Chichen Itza, Palenque and Uxmal are fabulous. Merida is a nice city, especially on Sundays. However, it's much more expensive than Guatemala, and it also lacks the atmosphere of Guatemala. The Caribbean coast (Playa Del Carmen, Tulum) could definitely not seduce us: it's hypertouristic and quite expensive also.    

Still, we went back to Mexico in 12/99 to finish the trip we had stopped in 1993. From Tikal we went to Bethel, crossed the Usumacinta river into Mexico, and then visited Yaxchilan, one of the highlights of our second trip (don't miss it). From there onwards to Palenque with side trip to Agua Azul. Then San Cristobal, Oaxaca and finally Mexico City. I think we"ll need a third trip to visit the Nothern part of the country.

México City is a great place, dont miss the Historic Centre, with many great and old buildings like the Metropolitan Cathedral, Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNA), Palacio Nacional, Museo Soumaya, Palacio de Iturbide (another museum, it belongs to Banamex), many interesting churches like La Profesa, Vizcaínas, Santo Domngo (you cant miss it), Inquisition Museum (next to Santo Domingo), Sanborns Building (completely recovered with blue and white tiles). It´s so big and interesting!!! You dont have enough time to see everything!!

A big museum is the National Anthropology and History Museum, in front of Chapultepec Forest. It has a lot of prehispanic exhibitions from all México. The Forest is great to take a walk, visiting the animals and the Castle of Chapultepec, which was built by Maximiliano of Habsburgo, an infortunate Emperor of México. Do you know the story? Its interesting.

Near México City, there is Teotihuacan, a great archaeological site

Veracruz is a very traditional place. Are you visiting the port of Veracruz? Try to visit San Juan de Ulua´s Fortress, Café La Parroquia...near Veracruz there is Hacienda El Lencero, an historic hacienda which belonged to Antonio López de Santa Anna, former President of México during a good part of the XIX century. You can go to Tlacotalpan, a special town, with its houses of brilliant colors and traditions. Jalapa is a good small city to visit. Tajín is an arch. site, with its niched pyramid and a complex of prehispanic buildings.

Tabasco has the honor of being the origin of Mesoamerican Mother Culture: the Olmecas. There are many archaeological plaes to visit: La Venta, Tres Zapotes and San Lorenzo. La Venta is near Villahermosa, the capital city of the State.

Yucatán is plenty of Mayan sites: Chichén Itzá, Uxmal,Labná...Im checking a map, and its really a huge area the one you want to visit...If you have one month to travel, you can cover almost all the places Im recomending you! Dont panic, even if you have less time, you can pla it better, but you can visit beautiful places, full with history and traditions

Tha palace of the fine arts, every sunday morning the Amalia Hernandez ballet is presented there, just incredible and totaly mexican. I´ll tell you later about two churches that are just behind the palace of the fine arts, that you must visit too, but I dont remember their names, but its very intresting to be there.
To eat: Café de Tacuba or El Cardenal, excellent mexican restaurants, the second one with a lot of history.
Just in front of the palace of the fine arts its a store name Sears, ther you go up to the last floor and there is a coffe shop with an open terraza (the coffe its not very good, but the view is just incredible!!!)
to the south of the city: coyoacán, on saturday the bazaar del sábado, the museums of Frida Kahlo and Dolores Olmedo
I think you need one day to visit all the things at down town an another day for the south part of the city.
From mexico city you can go to Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato and Morelia those cities are part of the independance rout, very beautiful all.
If you dont have time to go there, when you drive to veracruz you are going to pass though Puebla, stop by there and visit some of its historical places (I´ll tell you later because I dont remember very well).
Veracruz is very nice, well to be hones I dont remember, jeje I was like 6 when I went there.
I dont know Tabasco, but chiapas is incredible the estate beside tabasco, but you need like a week to visit it. But I dont recomed you to drive by your self, I think it´s a little dangerous.
Cancun beautiful beach, very american, beautiful hotels ( I can recomend you Gran Palace, Ive been there just two months ago, and I liked it a lot, all inclusive, good food, not very good drinks, good price.
But the intresting places to visit like Chicheitza, Tulum, Shelha, Xcaret are a must.
