We simply cannot enforce our AUP/TOS against our client from a verbal statement accusing an IP from our network posting spam. TOPIC: Are Guest Books Dead?

Guestbooks are not dead !!!

I have a spam free guestbook and here it's me playing games with the spammers, instead of the opposite. They can never get to me!

The main thing is to always report the spam sites to the search engines. That is so very important !!! If they are not listed in the search engines they eventually die out.

The second thing is to demand that the site is shut down by the host of the site. The spammers will change to another host and another server, but it will cost them and it will take a lot of time from them.

Note that all spam is done automatically by spam programs.

Apart from that I have other tricks.
I block some spammers from my whole site thru their IP, DNS or referrer, if I'm sure of that I'm not blocking someone I want to have access to the guest book.
Other spammers I only block if they enter a URL.

I keep a log with the links that they tried to enter so that I can report them to the search engines and the host of the site.

If nobody can write links in the guestbook, the guestbook is of no interest for the spammers. So the first thing to do is to not allow any links of any kind in the guestbook.

Hmmm ... a lot of hard work. I select the offending entry and press 'delete'.

Well, if you like to spend your days in front of your computer deleting spam I guess you can do it in this manual way. I think this is a lot more time consuming than my way.

Also, it gives me some satisfaction to create problems for the spammers, a low breed creature who deserves nothing but the worst.

The more who report spammers to search engines and the host of the site, the quicker we will get rid of the spammers.

We can also wait until the day we can not even use the Internet due to all the spammers, but personally I think it's best to stop them now!

Speaking exclusively about Guestbooks (which is what this thread is about) I get a couple a week. I'm notified by email when they arrive and 30 seconds later they're gone. It's no big deal. I certainly couldn't notify his host, or even find out who his host is, quicker than that.

From what You say I gather you spend your time tweking your exclusion algo.
That from experience can be even more time consuming than dealing with the actual problem.
Of couse not allowing links, and not providing for a website url anywhere can get lots out of the way.
Better yet I'd say only letting posting be done through a popup window so javascript is required to get there. That would stop bots.
But a lot depends on how the GB software is designed. You can't start changing it too much or risk not being able to handle future upgrades, assuming you didn't mess it up first.

Fight the spam!

Yes, you're right. The spammers find it more and more difficult for almost everyday to try and spam my forum. In the last year only two spam messages have slipped thru (and that was in the beginning of my fight against guest book spammers). I get about 20-40 tries to enter spam every day.

But today it gives me personal satisfaction to create problems for the spammers. For each spam that their spam programs try to enter in my guest book, I get more satisfaction.

So the time I've spent the last months has not been to try and stop the spam. It just can't get thru! The only time I spend is to see to that their sites are shut down and blocked out from the search engines.

Note that I do nothing else than dealing with the actual problem !!!
And it's somewhat frustrating that there are people who don't understand that this is the only way to stop spam.

As long as the spammers have nothing to fear they're only going to continue, and one day they might even break thru my "fool proof" spam safe (without capchta !!!) guest book.

One guest book spammer wrote this in another place;
"Well let me explain. Im that evil bad guy who looking for your guestbooks, blogs and forums, then adding them to spam list and pressing red button that activates spam program. And what we have? Next day u have hundred messages about different pills and casino and stuff in your page. U, guys, must understand that my point is not to make you click to one of those links or stuff. I dont really care even if u read those messages. The point of spam itself is posting valuable links on your pages. Much links i posted - much more my original site (where to those links leads to) get popularity. Much more cash i earn. So dont be so mad at us. We r not as bad guys as u all think, we working really hard, and we making money. And most of u, guys, who hate us dont even understand the point of guestbook and blog spam. Thats sad.
Oh by the way, hate to say it but i have to add your blog to my spam list. That is my job, nothing personal."

This is how they reason. And this only makes me more determined to create problems and make them loose money.

Javascript is not a very good solution. That is only a disadvantage for yourself (since it will give yourself a not so good place in the search engines result lists). I'm a search engine expert, so I know a bit about this.

My PHP-GB is written by myself, so I hope I can handle future upgrades

The Solution Of The Spam Problem!

All code I have for blocking, logging, etc spammers is separated from the guest book. That means that my code is a separate module which can be included in at least all of the worlds PHP guest books with just one or two "includes".

But I still recommend everyone to not permit links in guest books.
That in itself will kill all reasons (not just some!) for the spammers to harass you.

It's just one simple thing to do !!!

It's only a handfull spammers that do about 90 % of the spam in the world.
I think they have to be shut down.

Note that search engines, like for example Google, often contains more crap/spam than it contains real sites.
As long as Google (etc) isn't interested in giving you result lists that is of any interest it's up to you to contribute so that the spam disappears.
