Evolution Of Man

  1. The Sun makes up 99.86% of the Solar System's mass! That means that all the planets put together (including Jupiter) as well as all the asteroids only make up about 0.14% of the Solar System's mass.

  2. By mass the sun is 70% (75%) hydrogen, 28% (25%) helium, 1.5% carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, and 0.5% all other elements.

  3. If the sun's energy output decreased by one-tenth, the Earth would be covered in ice 1,5 km thick; if the sun's energy increased by 30 percent, all life on Earth would be incinerated.

  4. All the coal, oil, gas, and wood on Earth would only keep the Sun burning for a few days.

  5. Just a pinhead of the Sun's raw material could kill someone up to 160 kilometres away!

  6. An area of the Sun's surface the size of a postage stamp shines with the power of 1 500 000 candles.

  7. The amount of the Sun's energy reaching the Earth's atmosphere (known as the Solar constant) is equivalent to 1.37 kw of electricity per square metre!

  8. Light is thought to be the fastest thing in the universe. It travels 299.338 km each second. (i.e. the light from your computer screen streams at you at almost 300 000 km per second).

  9. It takes 8 - 8,5 minutes for sunlight to travel from the sun to the earth, which also means, if you see the sun go out, it actually went out 8 minutes ago.

  10. The sun is approximately 149 million kilometres from the earth.

  11. If you drove 110 km/h for 24 hours a day, it would take you 156 years to reach the Sun. It would take you about 41 200 000 years to reach the nearest star.

  12. The sun shrinks 1,5 meters every hour.

  13. A little bit more than 2 kg of sunlight strike the Earth each day.

  14. We have about 5 000 million years of sunlight left.

  15. The sun's average period of rotation is 27 days. (as if you'd care)

  16. The Earth orbits the sun at about 30 km per second.

  17. A full moon is nine times brighter than a half moon.

  18. 40 00 tons of space dust and other space debris fall on the Earth every year.

  19. That the length of a Plutonian year is 248 of our years! That means that one orbit of the Sun takes about 2 and a half Earth centuries. That's a quarter of a Millenium!

  20. Venus is the only planet that rotates clockwise.

  21. The South Pole has no sunshine for 182 days each year. The North Pole has no sunlight for 176 days.

  22. There are over one hundred billion galaxies with each galaxy having billions of stars.

  23. Some rocks found on Earth are actually pieces of Mars!

  24. A teaspoon of neutron star material weighs about 110 million tons.

  25. The surface area of the Earth is about 510 million square km.

  26. Physicists at Washington University in Seattle have determined that the Earth weighs 5 972 billions billion tonnes (6 billions billion tonnes lighter than previously thought).

  27. Flying once around the moon is the equivalent with a round trip from New York to London. Earth is about four times the size of the moon.

  28. The volume of the earth's moon is the same as the volume of the Pacific Ocean.

  29. The average size of a star is about 150 000 times bigger than the world.

  30. The first spacecraft to visit the planet Venus was Mariner 2 in 1962.

  31. Only one satellite has been destroyed by a meteor, which was the European Space Agency's Olympus in 1993.

  32. The odds against a person being struck by a meteorite are ten trillion to one.

  33. Seven people have been struck by meteorite fragments.
